Sandpaper in general can be used for metal polishing as well. With the right sandpaper, reviving badly pitted brass can be done easily. The brass might be pitted and tarnished but with a thin protective coating (that is usually a clear lacquer) first must be completely removed before sanding. You can use a paint remover to achieve this. Once you remove the clear coating, the sandpaper can be used to remove the oxidized surface layer of the brass, including any of the pitting that exists.
Sanding is not difficult and as long as you go into it with proper knowledge you will be just fine. Enjoy making your work look even finer with this simple step of sanding using an abrasive paper with Araldite.
